Whispers of lover at the Klokkenpaal - Murmuris d'amor al Klokkenpaal

In the past, the Klokkenpaal (bell post) in Volendam served various practical and communal purposes. For example, the bell was rung to announce the start of the daily fish auction in the harbor. Only later, in the early 19th century, did it become a romantic spot and a symbol for celebrating engagements and local ceremonies.

Back then, when a Volendam couple announced their intention to marry, friends and family would celebrate at the Klokkenpaal. After signing the papers in Edam (where the registry office was located), the couple returned to Volendam by boat and then went in procession to the Klokkenpaal, where the bell was rung and a ceremonial reception took place.

My painting is a tribute to all the couples who have ever celebrated their love under the Klokkenpaal. The two birds, a lifelong pair, symbolize enduring love and form a bridge between those promises from the past and the love we feel in our lives.
